Friday Flings - Veggies In Motion through Aug. 21
The Friday Flings Farmer’s Market is open across from the Visitor Center from 11 to 6 each Friday through August 21th sporting the Veggies In Motion theme. With support from the Mat Su Health Foundation this theme focuses on healthy eating and living.
"Walk About Palmer" - sign up, get a pedometer, water bottle and a weekly incentive prize from local merchants. Maps showing three walking loops of various durations are available. At the end of the summer, a grand prize will be awarded to the walker with the most Friday steps.
Prizes included a three month gym membership at the Alaska Express Club in Palmer, and a summer subscription of fresh Valley vegetables from the Kenley farm.
The last healthy living component of the Market is scheduled for late July or early August - depending on how the fish are running. At the Great Salmon Giveaway, they’ll be fresh BBQ to sample and more information about how to eat healthy. Stay tuned for updates on this event.

Colony Days 2009 - June 12th - 14th
Colony Days 2009 - June 12th -14th
Join us as we celebrate and honor the arrival of the Colonists from 1935, who started our farming community!
This years theme:
The Return of the Grotto-Lunker...many still remember the days so many years ago when a dragon-like creature emerged from its icy mountain cave in Hatcher Pass. For those unfamiliar with the legend - let me fill you in. When the great ice fields moved through the Matanuska Valley, tens of millions of years ago, they left more than gravel deposits. They moved huge mounds of earth and carved our valley from ancient stone. In that time so long ago, a creature roamed the valley, a creature not found anywhere else on earth...the Grotto-Lunker. As the ice fields moved through, the Grotto-Lunkers were forced into mountain caves where they were trapped by advancing glacial ice. With the passage of time, the ice covering the caves became thin on the longest day of the year, and the Grottos were able to break through. The recent volcanic activity has once again awakened the Grotto-Lunkers and they will try to free themselves for the Colony Days Celebration, near the longest day of the year. Legend has it that the Grotto-Lunker is afraid of huge gatherings of fun people, so the Colony Days Festival was created to drive them back to their caves. Join us on June 12, 13 & 14 in downtown Palmer, Alaska for the return of the Grotto-Lunker and help us send them back to their caves in Hatcher Pass for another year.
